Responsible Conduct of Research

The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity (ORI), the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation have determined that investigators benefiting from certain federal research funds should undergo proper training in the conduct of responsible research. Institutions are obliged to establish appropriate research policies and educational programs. Research must be conducted according to ethical standards, regulatory and institutional requirements, Rush’s research policies, and training program requirements.

Responsible conduct of research (RCR) provides the foundation for conducting sound, ethical research and reinforcing public trust. Rush promotes RCR within the research community by providing convenient, innovative and complementary opportunities for initial and continuing education not only for prescribed RCR topics, but also for a broad spectrum of research concerns.

Federal responsible conduct of research requirements cover the following:

  • Data acquisition, management, sharing and ownership
  • Conflict of interest and commitment
  • Human subjects
  • Animal welfare
  • Research misconduct
  • Publication practices and responsible authorship
  • Mentor and trainee responsibilities
  • Peer review
  • Collaborative science

Training

The Office of Research Compliance educates personnel in research and professional ethics. Training prepares students and research personnel for ethical issues that may arise during the conduct of their research. The training teaches new and seasoned researchers to approach their work with integrity and carry out the institution’s mission to pursue innovative work in a collaborative, responsible, respectful, ethical and accountable manner.

To request a session for RCR training, please contact the Office of Research Compliance directly at (312) 942-1296.
