Working Men’s Healthy Lifestyles Study

Men working in blue-collar occupations, such as machine operation, transportation, and construction, have a high prevalence of overweight and obesity and have high rates of diseases associated with obesity. Unfortunately, these men are unlikely to participate in evidenced-based weight loss interventions. To improve their participation in these programs, we are studying how to develop recruitment messages that encourage participation in weight loss programs and adapt behavioral weight loss strategies for use among men working in blue-collar occupations. For this project, a series of studies will use interviews, focus groups, and preference surveys to identify recruitment messaging and program components that will better appeal to men in this group. These new approaches will be tested in a small-scale pilot study. (K01DK119457)
