Trainee Research Day 2022

Trainee Research Day is an event held each spring that features poster presentations, an elevator speech competition, trainee platform speeches, and an awards reception. Judging will be performed by faculty, alumni, other friends of Rush, and peers (“People’s Choice”). In addition to highlighting trainee accomplishments, Trainee Research Day presents an opportunity for colleagues and visitors to learn about the cutting edge research occurring at Rush.

Who Can Participate
  • All matriculated students and recently graduated alumni (students who graduated on/or after May 2021)
  • Post-Doctoral Research Fellows
  • Clinical Fellows
  • Clinical Residents
  • 2021 Summer Research Program Participants
Abstract Submission

All trainees must submit their abstracts by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12 via this form. Prior to submission it is recommended that the abstract guidelines are reviewed.  Poster acceptances will be notified by early February.

Abstract Guidelines

Review this guide prior to accessing the online abstract submission site:

  • Abstract should be written in a clear, concise, and grammatically correct format.
  • Abstract body (combined fields) cannot exceed 350 words. Abstracts >350 words will be truncated.
Abstract Field Descriptions

Presenting Author: Enter presenting/first author’s name

Co-Authors: Enter the co-authors' names in the order of contribution or in the order they should appear on the submitted abstract with the presenting/first author listed first.

Affiliation/Institution: List the institution name parenthesis next to appropriate author. Example: Tom Jones (UIC); Mary Meyer (Loyola); and Lisa Silver (U of C0)

Title: Use a short, descriptive title.

Category: Select from the list provided.

Abstract Body: Cannot exceed 350 words. Abstracts >350 words will be truncated.

  • Introduction: The introduction must contain a brief statement of the question, hypothesis, or objective.
    • Outline the background for the problem being studied.
    • Identify the problem.
    • Why do we care about the problem?
    • What scientific gap is the research filling?
    • Define the question, hypothesis, or objective.
  • Methods: Methods, including statistical techniques.
    • A clear, concise description of the methods used including research design and statistical analysis.
    • Human experiments must note approval of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and informed consent.
    • Animal experiments must note approval of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Results: Essential results, including data, sample size, and statistics.
    • Data aligned with methodology and objectives.
    • Must include at least preliminary data.
  • Conclusions: Place results into context of previous knowledge or literature. Discuss results including limitations within the framework of stated question or hypothesis.

Oral Presentation Awards
A total of 10 finalists will be selected by faculty judges from each college to give oral presentation. 
  • 2 matriculated students from each college
  • 2 fellows/residents (post-doctoral research fellow, clinical fellow and clinical resident)
Final slides are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 14. More information to follow.
 
Poster Presentation Awards
All presenters must stand by their poster as follows:
  • Odd poster numbers:  2:30 -  3:30 p.m.
  • Even poster numbers:  3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
All presenters are encouraged to follow the poster guidelines as space is limited. Posters will need to be set-up between 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. More information to follow.

Poster Guidelines

Preparing and Printing of Posters 

  • Recommended poster template.
  • Maximum (and recommended) poster size is 45” x 45”.
  • Trainees are responsible for printing costs.
  • The cost to print your poster at Rush is $70.  For more information contact Quick_Copy@rush.edu.

Posters Boards

  • A ½ board will be allowed for each poster.
  • Maximum (and recommended) poster size is 45” x 45”.
  • Poster set-up on Wednesday, March 16 between 3 – 5 p.m.
  • Check-In your poster using QR code on your poster card.
  • Posters should be on display on Thursday, March 17 between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Elevator Speech Finalists' Competition

All trainees who wish to participate in this competition must complete this form by Tuesday, February 1. Workshop information will be sent to participants. 

Elevator Speech Guidelines
Trainees who wish to participate in the elevator pitch competition will be required to attend two training workshop sessions and produce a video for prejudging. Finalists will present on Trainee Research Day and will be judged by faculty, alumni, other friends of Rush, and peers (“People's Choice”).  An abstract submission is not required to participate in this session.
