The Family Medicine Leadership Program (FMLP) is a four-year longitudinal curriculum designed to equip a select group of RUSH Medical College students to become outstanding family physician leaders. The FMLP curriculum emphasizes family-centered, community-based, innovative learning as well as the development of leadership and advocacy skills throughout the four years of medical college.
What can I expect participating in the program?
As a FMLP student, you will be assigned to an ambulatory practice that serves as your clinical “home base” for your entire medical school experience. There, you will engage in care across the lifespan for diverse individuals and their families under the supervision of a family medicine faculty mentor. You will become an integral part of the health care team, gaining an appreciation for continuity of care by following patients over time and observing the course of illness and recovery.
You will also participate in scholarship activities and extramural experiences focused on preparing you to become a future clinical and academic leader. The FMLP curriculum is designed so that you will develop a deeper understanding of the issues facing communities on Chicago’s West Side and you will complete a project addressing an identified need in one of these communities.
As an FMLP student, you will receive mentorship by senior FMLP students and by faculty in the Department of Family Medicine. You will be given individual support, resources and guidance to facilitate academic progress, personal development and professional transformation.
