Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program

The vibrant, diverse city of Chicago is a nationally recognized medical hub. Students of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at RUSH Medical College train primarily at two of the area’s largest and most respected hospitals: RUSH University Medical Center, an academic medical center; and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, a public hospital.

The two facilities are within walking distance of each other on Chicago’s West Side and offer advantageous settings for learning. The MD program exposes you to wide-ranging and complex cases, allowing you to interact with patients from various ethnic, racial and socioeconomic groups.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) program offers hands-on experience

During the M1 and M2 years of the MD program, you gain the skills needed to work interactively with patients in the health care setting. Beginning immediately in the M1 year, our curriculum immerses you in early clinical experiences to guide you in learning about patient histories, physical examinations and other clinical skills. This unique opportunity allows you to become part of a medical team and to see a patient across health care settings.

Accomplished faculty of the MD program

Because many of our faculty are physicians, they practice what they teach. For example, your professor may lecture on ventricular arrhythmia on one day and implant a cardioverter defibrillator the next day. Eventually, you might perform the same procedure under the faculty member’s watchful eye.

Commitment to community service

Established in 1991, the RUSH Community Service Initiatives Program provides you with ample opportunities to serve our community on the West Side of Chicago and beyond. These volunteer experiences enhance your ability to work in teams, develop patient relationships, care for diverse populations and provide targeted health care and social services based on community need.

Focus on diversity

At RUSH Medical College, we provide you with diverse experiences that reach far beyond the classroom. Through clinical rotations, community service and student affinity groups, you are exposed to inclusive environments rich in culture, perspective and personal experiences. These opportunities prepare our future physicians to meet the health care challenges of an ever-changing society.

Research opportunities

With more than 150 research grants from the National Institutes of Health, research at RUSH is at the leading edge. Investigators at RUSH are involved in more than 1,600 projects, including hundreds of clinical studies to test the effectiveness and safety of new therapies and medical devices, as well as to expand scientific and medical knowledge.
