Message From the Department of Pediatrics Chairperson

Anna Spagnoli, MD

Rush Children’s Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics provide a stimulating and inspiring learning environment for our trainees to build the educational foundation for their development as future regional and national leaders in their fields. Our students, residents and fellows work side by side with our engaged faculty, learning through observation, collaboration, research and practice. Most of our residents have pursued their careers at major hospitals and health care organizations.

As part of a university-based health care system, the 120-bed Rush Children’s Hospital provides world-class care to infants, children and adolescents throughout the diverse communities of the Chicago area and beyond. Our experienced specialists provide a full range of pediatric care, from genetic testing and chronic care management to advanced treatments for rare and complex diseases. Our neonatal intensive care unit is one of the largest advanced care units in the state, and our ambulatory clinics serve approximately 50,000 patients a year.

Our department prides itself on providing coordinated, family-centered care that recognizes that each family is unique and knows better than anybody else the needs of their child. Therefore, we fully integrate family members into decision-making to establish the best care plan for their children. Toward this end, we have launched virtual rounding, which ensures that parents or other family members can be present — via an iPad application — whenever the health care team is rounding on their child.

Our department is fully invested in promoting the growth of world-class research to stimulate discovery in child health through team-based innovative interdisciplinary research, including interdepartmental and nationwide multi-center research aimed at bridging the bed-bench gap.

Rush Children’s Hospital is part of Rush University Medical Center, an academic medical center with the interwoven goals of clinical care, research and education. Rush University Medical Center has been recognized as the number two medical center in the country for quality and accountability by the University HealthSystem Consortium. In 2015, Rush was the only hospital in Chicago to receive a four-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for delivering an outstanding patient experience.

I invite you to learn more about our department by reading about our areas of expertise, our research and our postgraduate training programs.
