The Department of Anesthesiology at Rush University has long been recognized for its comprehensive and excellent medical care. Located in the heart of the Illinois Medical District, the anesthesiology department offers patients the best in innovative anesthesia and medical services. This stimulating environment also provides the department’s postgraduate residents and fellows with a rich and extensive academic experience in all areas of anesthesiology, including solid organ  transplants, major neurosurgical and spinal surgery, tertiary obstetrics, critical care and pain medicine. In addition to Rush, the department provides medical care at Rush Oak Park Hospital and the Rush Surgicenter. The anesthesiology department also has one of the country’s largest pain centers, providing acute and chronic pain management services to more than 12,000 patients annually in preoperative and non-operative settings.

Anesthesiology Residents Successful at 2018 Midwest Anesthesia Residents Conference, in Cincinnati on the weekend of April 13-15, 2018

Dr. Raj Patel received the first place award in the Basic Science category and presented his study “CAN BIPHOSPHONATE DRUGS PREVENT PAIN IN A MOUSE CRPS MODEL?”

His mentors were Dr. Kroin, Dr. Buvanendran and Dr. Das.

Dr. Morgan Ulloa received the second place award in the Basic Science category and presented his study “CHANGES IN PAIN MEDIATORS IN MOUSE DORSAL ROOT GANGLION AFTER BONE FRACTURE.”

His mentors were Dr. Kroin, Dr. Buvanendran and Dr. Das.

Dr. Michael Warren received the first place award in the Pain Studies category and presented his study “ACUTE POSTOPERATIVE PAIN IS AN INDEPENDENT PREDICTOR OF PERSISTENT POSTSURGICAL PAIN FOLLOWING TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY.”

His mentors were Dr. Buvanendran and Dr. McCarthy.

Dr. Danial Shams received the second place award in the Pain Studies category and presented his study “DORSAL ROOT GANGLION STIMULATION FOR CHRONIC PAIN”

His mentor was Dr. Lubenow.

Dr. David Kim received the second place award in the Pain Case Reports category and presented his study “CHRONIC SACROILIAC JOINT PAIN SUCCESSFULLY TREATED WITH DORSAL ROOT GANGLION STIMULATION”

His mentor was Dr. Young.

Dr. Anna Sobilo received the second place award in the General Case Reports category and presented her study “SPLENOPNEUMOPEXY.”

Her mentor was Dr. Pearson-Chauhan.

Dr. Arjun Ramesh received the second place award in the Obstetrical Case Reports category and presented his study “ANESTHESTHETIC MANAGEMENT OF MIRROR SYNDROME.”

His mentor was Dr. Perry.

Dr. Tran Hung received the third place award in the Pain Case Reports category and presented his study “DORSAL ROOT GANGLION STIMULATION FOR CHRONIC PAIN IN CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISEASE.”

His mentor was Dr. Amin.

Bryce Autsell, MD, was also a finalist for his study “DRUGS PRESCRIBED AT HOSPITAL DISCHARGE AFTER SURGERY FOR PAIN CONTROL.” His mentor  was Dr. Buvanendran.

The Midwest Anesthesia Resident’s Conference (MARC) was held April 21 – 23, 2017 at The Hyatt Regency Chicago. The Department of Anesthesiology had twenty-eight residents presenting thirty research studies or case reports. Ten of our residents received awards for their presentations. 

Congratulations to John Ha, who won the 2nd place FAER award for his presentation in basic sciences titled: The Role of Cartilage B-Catenin Signaling in the Development of Spondyloarthritis in Mice. Dr. Ha was mentored by Dr. Jeffrey Kroin.

Congratulations also to the following MARC award winners.

David M. Rothenberg, MD, FCCM, Receives the Distinguished Service Award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Anesthesiology in Illinois” from The Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists.

Asokumar Buvanandran, MD, Appointed President of American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
Originally founded in 1923, ASRA was reborn in 1975 and is the largest subspecialty medical society in Anesthesiology. With approximately 4,500 members, the society has rich international distribution and rising attendance at annual meetings and scientific presentations. Dr. Buvanendran’s ASRA presidency will last through April 2019 and include hosting the World Congress of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, an event not scheduled to occur in the United States for another 24 years and expected to attract more than 3,000 delegates.
