Alumni Reflections

“I decided to do a Global Health fellowship at Rush because I was at a crossroad in my career, and I had a lot of questions and very few answers. The fellowship not only provided me with answers but also helped me fall in love with medicine again. Thanks to my fellowship year, I now see a path to accomplishing my lifelong goal of increasing subspecialty access in sub-Saharan Africa. The Rush Global Health and Community Empowerment staff are some of the most amazing people I have met, and it was a joy to go to work every day.” - Femi Olorunda, Fellow Alumnus

“The one year GH fellowship through Rush provided me a chance to  experience different systems of health care delivery abroad and to serve under-resourced populations. In addition to primary care, fellows work in collaboration with many different medical specialties through surgical trips including ENT, Ob-gyn, General surgery, Plastic surgery, Audiology, Urology, and Orthopedic surgery to develop valuable leadership skills. Fellows also have the opportunity to design and pursue a global health research study during their year. Highly recommended for those interested in having an impact in improving healthcare in resource-limited global settings.” - Justina Johnson, Fellow Alumnus

Where are they now?

The goal of the Fellowship is to create life-long leaders and advocates in promoting health equity locally and globally. Our alumni have gone on to pursue interesting careers in medicine and academics, including:
  • Becoming a Hospitalist
  • Securing a second Fellowship (Nephrology and Cardiology)
  • Leading global health teams
  • Creating global health programs at other institutions
