Section of Addiction Medicine

According to the 2024 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, an estimated 48.4 million individuals-around 16.8 percent of the US Population - met the criteria for a substance use disorder. About 61.5 million individuals experienced any mental illness (AMI).

31.5% of Adults who reported AMI, also met criteria for a substance use disorder - a phenomenon better known as co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Addiction Medicine services at Rush live under the Department of Psychiatry and encompass clinical, educational, research, and community projects meant to tackle the ever-growing problem of Addiction in our community. With clinical programs in both inpatient and outpatient settings, Rush endeavors to provide comprehensive care for patients seeking treatment for substance use and co-occurring Psychiatric disorders. The Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT) and RUSH Addiction Medicine Program (RAMP) consist of Physicians trained in Addiction Medicine, Advanced Practice Providers, Nurses, Social Workers, and support staff working together to identify and treat patients with Substance Use Disorders.

Addiction Medicine leaders at Rush support Psychiatry Research and scholarship dedicated to the field of Addiction Medicine with programs that stretch from the laboratory to the community. Addiction Medicine Providers play an important role in the education of future healthcare Providers through the Psychiatry Residency Program , the Addiction Medicine Fellowship,and the teaching of Rush’s Medical students through rotations with the inpatient SUIT consult service.
