Student Nurses Association

The Rush University Student Nurses Association, or RU-SNA, is our local chapter of the National Student Nurses Association, or NSNA. NSNA is the primary pre-professional organization for nursing students. Through NSNA you can do the following:

  • Learn about leadership skills
  • Participate in community health projects
  • Discuss trends and issues in nursing
  • Network for career development
  • Receive reduced rates at conventions
  • Receive reduced rates for products such as nursing magazines, computer software, nursing apparel and accessories

RU-SNA strives to be supportive by acting as an advocate for nursing student enrichment and professional development. The local organization also strives to keep students up to date on legislative activities and important news from the national (NSNA) and state levels (SNA-Illinois).

Furthermore, RU-SNA provides opportunities for students to become familiar with and participate in a professional nursing organization early in their career. Students learn that networking can be an important factor in a successful nursing career. All nursing students are eligible to be members and to run for the board. An information session describing each position on the board is held in the fall. Elections are ongoing through the school year. Even without holding a board position, students can get involved by reaching out and working with the various board members of RU-SNA.

In addition to networking with colleagues at Rush, local and national conventions offer students a unique opportunity to network with other students from around the state and country about programs, classes, jobs and higher education opportunities. The national convention each year addresses many of the issues that are important to practicing nurses and professional organizations.

RU-SNA holds various events and programming of its own throughout the year:

  • GEM Mentor-Mentee Program
  • Reach Out and Read (ROAR)
  • Personalized College of Nursing Fleece Sales
  • Regular events such as Lunch & Learn and Beyond the Bedside Badge Reel Sales

Has sponsored and/or participated in these social and community events in the past:

  • Stop the Bleed
  • NSNA State and National Convention
  • Be The Match bone marrow donor registrations
  • Chicago Marathon

Other social, professional and informational events have included forums that discuss careers in nursing, advanced directives, and NCLEX review.
