The mission of the Department of Preventive Medicine is to improve public health and reduce the burden of chronic disease, especially in underserved populations, through high-quality research, service and education. Our physicians see thousands of patients each year in the Rush Prevention Center, providing medical students with ample experience caring for patients from a variety of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Typically, these patients are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes, or have had difficulty controlling blood pressure.

We have a long track record of research success, including clinical trials, longitudinal studies and multicenter drug trials. Thanks to a $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, our Center for Urban Health Equity is investigating how various lifestyle and behavioral interventions can alleviate health inequities in heart and lung diseases.

Our department also provides healthy lifestyle programs — from weight management and fitness to mindfulness training — to patients, nearby residents, students, residents and staff.
