Welcome to the Complex Family Planning Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. Rush is an urban, academic medical center based in Chicago serving a diverse patient population and is a recognized and respected advocate for quality health care for women. The Complex Family Planning Fellowship will provide physicians with the opportunity to gain both clinical and research skills in all aspects of Family Planning. Clinical training
Fellows work with a team of faculty members who have extensive training in abortion care, pregnancy loss, contraception, and research. Clinical care is provided within the Family Planning Clinic and Operating Room at Rush as well as in connection with Planned Parenthood of Illinois. Working within all of these clinical sites provides a diversity of opportunities to the Fellow and gives them ample opportunity to teach residents and medical students. We also collaborate with colleagues in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in other medical specialties, preparing Fellows to be expert consultants.
Our clinical training includes:
- Medical and procedural management of pregnancy loss and abortion care, including late 2nd trimester/early 3rd trimester care
- Performed outpatient (clinic and Planned Parenthood), in OR, and on L&D
- Fetal injections with digoxin and lidocaine
- Management of cesarean scar ectopic and cervical ectopic pregnancies
- High volume transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasound for pregnancy location and dating, placental location, and diagnosis of placental abnormalities
- Early pregnancy assessment clinic
- Complex contraception, including deep contraceptive implant removal, difficult IUD removal, and contraception for the medically complex
- Joint Neurology/CFP clinic for patients with catamenial epilepsy
- Sterilization
- Methods of pain management
- Maintaining general OB skills as a Hospitalist Attending on L&D
Education and Research
Our education and research curriculum includes:
- Master's Degree with training in epidemiology, biostatistics, study design, and grant writing: Master's of Science in Clinical Research
- Weekly "Fellows' School" with rotating curriculum in abortion care and contraception
- Participation in weekly journal club with residents analyzing research methodology and outcomes for key family planning articles
- Presentation at Department Grand Rounds
- Opportunity to lead resident and/or medical student didactic sessions
- Opportunity to present at national conferences
- Access to Department's clinical research coordinator and other research resources including statisticians, epidemiologists, and data analysts
- Potential funding for research studies in family planning to further the Fellow’s ability to become an independent investigator
During the course of the fellowship, each Fellow will develop a structured research project and thesis. Fellows are also presented with opportunities to participate in the Division’s many research projects. Depending on individual interests, Fellows can work on clinical, basic science, and/or social science research.
