Message From the Department of Internal Medicine Chairperson

In medicine today, we have no small mission ahead of us. We owe so much to the physicians and scientists who came before us for the vast and profound advances of the past century.

But countless opportunities remain: to improve patient outcomes, ensure healthier populations, reduce the cost burden and train the next generation of physicians.

That’s why we have taken big steps in RUSH’s Department of Internal Medicine to assemble some of the brightest minds in medicine, acquire the most advanced technologies and equipment and foster a nurturing culture that puts a premium on innovation, collaboration and quality.

We believe the best way to predict the future of medicine is to be actively involved in its design and improvement — whether at the bedside or in the clinic, through our clinical trials and research, in rounds with medical students and residents or during multidisciplinary patient safety meetings.

Our goal is to be at the forefront and at the top, not only amongst academic medicine departments in Chicago but also in the country and abroad. I believe we are well on our way to attaining this goal.

Many of RUSH’s medical programs consistently rank among the top in the U.S. News and World Report, and we are home to a number of Chicago’s top doctors. Our researchers garner millions in grant funding and publish important, sometimes ground breaking research papers each year.

Recent research advances include linking a circadian rhythm disruption to liver cirrhosis and establishing a connection between a common circulating protein (suPAR) and chronic kidney disease.

I invite you to learn more about our department’s achievements by reading about our 13 divisions, our research and our postgraduate training programs.
