Haimanot (Monnie) Wasse, MD, MPH, is professor and vice chairperson in the Department of Internal Medicine. She is also the director of interventional nephrology, a program she started at RUSH. A distinguished physician, scientist and professor, Wasse previously directed the interventional nephrology program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and prior to that, headed interventional nephrology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. She is board-certified in nephrology and interventional nephrology.
Wasse’s mission at RUSH is to bring Chicago-area kidney disease patients the highest standard of comprehensive vascular access care; to prepare clinicians to provide patient-centered vascular access care; and identify and address the causes, prevention and treatment of vascular access dysfunction.
Wasse’s research focus on the predictors, consequences and treatment of arteriovenous access dysfunction. Her work characterizes the key mechanisms, pathways and genes involved in dialysis access dysfunction, particularly in high-risk populations. Her previous work, as principal investigator of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other institutions, paves the way for these efforts.
Wasse is past-president of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology and serves in other executive positions for professional societies nationally. A dedicated educator, she has intensively mentored and taught numerous fellows, residents and medical students, and will continue to do so at RUSH.
