Many years ago, I was inspired by the work of Lillian Wald and the nurses of the Henry Street Settlement in New York who implemented groundbreaking community-based health services in the tenements where newly arrived immigrants lived. This model—and the concept of community-based care—has informed my desire to work as a Family Nurse Practitioner in poorly resourced communities. During my career I have focused on primary care for migrants, refugees and people living with disabilities throughout the spectrum. I have worked in Federally Qualified Health Centers, public housing and immigrant communities in Chicago, Boston and Latin America. As an FNP, I feel privileged to be able to bear witness to patients’ lives and hear their stories. I work to guide FNP students at RUSH to focus on the complex association between individual healthcare needs and community health.
