Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the Rush University Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The reason I came to Rush, and the reason I’ve stayed, is the combination of stellar clinical training and a culture where we truly function as a team and feel like a family. That culture doesn’t happen by accident. It’s something we protect intentionally, recruit for deliberately, and work hard to pass on to every class that joins us. If you speak with our residents, I have no doubt you’ll get a genuine sense of what makes this place special.

Rush is located on the West Side of Chicago, serving a highly underserved community. Improving access to care is central to our mission. That commitment is woven into how we train, from the general medical floors to our primary care continuity clinics. Here, you’ll graduate clinically confident, with broad exposure across the full spectrum of medicine and opportunities to develop your own clinical identity. Whether your interests lie in procedures, medical education, quality and safety, community health, or something else entirely, there are individualized pathways to help you grow. Just as importantly, we want you to leave Rush prepared for what comes next. Through mentorship, career advising, and opportunities to pursue your individual interests, we help residents build the skills and experiences they need for fellowship, academic medicine, primary care, hospital medicine, and whatever path they choose.

What I want most for every resident who trains here is to be hands-on, engaged, and accountable to your patients, to your team, and to yourself. Our responsibility as program leadership is to create an environment where you can thrive while taking phenomenal care of the people who depend on us.

That, to me, is what being a Rush resident is really about.
