Master of Science (MS) in Cardiovascular Perfusion Admissions

Program Prerequisites

We ask that you complete the following prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better prior to enrolling: 

• Natural and biological sciences — 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours, including the following courses: 
  • Human anatomy and physiology, one semester each or two semesters of a combined course with a lab component. 
  • Inorganic chemistry, one semester. 
  • Physics, one semester. 
• Mathematics — two college-level courses, including an introductory course in statistics
• English composition — two courses
• Social sciences — 14 semester hours or 20 quarter hours, including the following courses: 
  • Introduction to psychology. 
  • Introduction to sociology. 
  • Other social science courses may include psychology, sociology, economics, history or anthropology. 
• Humanities — 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours:
  • Courses may include religion, philosophy, foreign languages, literature, or the history of art, music, theater, film or dance. 
  • Studio art, instrumental music and speech classes are not acceptable. 
• Medical Terminology

In addition, it is highly recommended that prospective students talk to a clinical perfusionist and, if possible, observe a procedure requiring the use of cardiopulmonary bypass.

Admissions requirements

The following is required for admission consideration: 

• Bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited college or university prior to matriculation 
• Cumulative and science prerequisite grade-point averages of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale 
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job (support is available for students with disabilities) 

How to Apply to the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion Program

Take the following steps to apply:

• Complete an application using the Allied Health Centralized Application Service (AHCAS).
• You will also need the following ready to submit to AHCAS:
  • Official transcripts from every U.S. college or university attended.
  • International course evaluations for all coursework completed outside the United States.
  • Three professional recommendations.
    • References should be from current or former academic advisers, managers or supervisors.
    • Evaluations from co-workers, family members, and friends, are not accepted.
  • Personal statement.
• Submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores if your native language is not English.
• Participate in a personal interview with program faculty.

Applications will be reviewed as they are verified by AHCAS.  

You are encouraged to submit the applications and application items as early in the admissions cycle as possible.  

Interviews begin in January and February and are required for admission into the program.  

Applicants whose applications have been verified and reviewed will receive an application status update or interview invitation by the end of February. 

While shadowing or observing a perfusionist is not required, prospective students are encouraged to seek out such opportunities to gain a better understanding of the perfusionist’s role in the operating room. Applicants who choose to shadow a perfusionist should use this form to document their hours.
