Department of Otorhinolaryngology Areas of Expertise

Rush’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology has a number of innovative clinical services, providing opportunities for medical students, residents and researchers to gain experience and deepen their skills.

Acoustic neuromas: This program provides comprehensive subspecialty acoustic neuroma treatment options, including include minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques, which support hearing preservation, and stereotactic radiosurgery using TrueBeam STx.

Communicative disorders: The communicative disorders program at Rush is a center of excellence for the evaluation and management of patients with speech, language and hearing problems.

Facial nerve disorders and rehabilitation: Our team uses advanced microsurgical techniques and reanimation software to restore expression and movement in patients with facial paralysis.

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery: Our physicians offer a broad spectrum of aesthetic and reconstructive surgical options, including cosmetic procedures, management of facial paralysis, repair of maxillofacial trauma, reconstruction after skin cancer surgery, and microvascular reconstruction after head and neck cancer surgery.

General otolaryngology: Our specialists provide comprehensive evaluation and management of all general ear, nose and throat, or ENT, problems.

Head and neck surgical oncology: Our head and neck cancer team provides individualized care for tumors involving the skin, salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands, oral cavity, oropharynx, and larynx. Multidisciplinary care is rendered through Coleman Foundation Comprehensive Cancer Clinics.

Laryngology: Our physicians work closely with colleagues across Rush to provide multidisciplinary care for voice and swallowing disorders, including evaluation of hoarseness, laryngopharyngeal reflux, spasmodic dysphonia, vocal cord paralysis and laryngotracheal abnormalities.

Otology, neurotology and lateral skull base surgery: Our physicians work closely with colleagues across Rush to manage complex disorders of the ear, hearing and balance, facial nerve, and temporal bone. Specialized services include acoustic neuroma surgery and cochlear implantation.

Pediatric otolaryngology: Our specialists perform evaluation and management of a broad array of pediatric ENT problems, including tonsil and adenoid disease, sinus disease, airway problems, head and neck masses, ear diseases and speech and language problems.

Pediatric aerodigestive diseases: This program provides coordinated multispecialty care for children with complex disorders affecting the airway, including chronic cough, feeding/swallowing, sleep and voice problems.

Rhinology and sinus surgery: Our rhinologists provide comprehensive medical and surgical care for disorders afflicting the nose and paranasal sinuses, including acute and chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, fungal sinusitis and allergies.

Sleep surgery: Our physicians provide leading-edge surgical services to patients with sleep-disordered breathing, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Our specialists work closely with other sleep medicine physicians to coordinate care.

Skull base surgery: The skull base team at Rush specializes in treatment of complex skull base disorders, including cerebrospinal fluid leak repair and management of benign and malignant neoplasms of the cranial base. Our specialists are on the forefront of minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for removal of sinonasal and skull base tumors.
