Lisa Sánchez-Johnsen, PhD, MS is the Vice-Chair for Research and an Associate Professor in the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine at Rush University. She is also the Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workgroup in the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine, as well as the Director of Behavioral Health & Wellness, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Research at the Rush-Esperanza Family Medicine Residency Program. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
She has 30 years of experience conducting research and clinical work with Latinxs and other underserved communities. Her interests are in culture-centered health care, culture-centered obesity interventions and assessments for Latinxs, Asians, and Blacks using community-engaged approaches; disparities in weight loss after bariatric surgery across ethnic groups; and cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk reduction in Latinxs, Asians and other underserved groups and has received numerous grants and awards in these areas. Sánchez-Johnsen received her BA in Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and her PhD and MS degrees in Clinical Psychology from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. She completed a behavioral medicine pre-doctoral internship at The University of Chicago and a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She was previously an Associate Professor and Director of the Bariatric Surgery Research Program and Multicultural and Latinx Health Research Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (2010-2020), an Assistant Professor at The University of Chicago (2006-2010), and an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Cancer Research Center of Hawaii (2003-2006).
