Over the course of her career, Kathleen R. Delaney, PhD, APRN, PMH-NP, FAAN has studied inpatient psychiatric treatment environments, particularly assuring safe environments by proactive approaches, engagement and creating patient-centered cultures of care. She recently completed a Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) study building a tool (the Combined Assessment of Psychiatric Environments) that gauges the patient and staff experience on inpatient psychiatric units.
Recently, she served on the Center for Mental Health Services Technical Advisory Panel for the Inpatient Psychiatric Facility (IPF) Outcome and Process Measure Development and Maintenance Project. She also works with the American Psychiatric Nursing Association (APNA) Council for Safe Environments and with that group recently published a paper on quality in inpatient psychiatry. Delaney has led and is now a member of the APNA task forces which develop position papers on inpatient staffing.
Delaney’s other interests include nursing workforce. She is past Chair of the Illinois Center for Nursing which gathers data on all Illinois RNs/LPNs/APRNs. She also works with the APNA Nursing Workforce group. In her role as Graduate Nursing Education Project Director, she was involved in establishing models for APN training models particularly for underserved populations and has carried this work into her Advanced Nursing Education Workforce grant and now into the HRSA funded NP residency program.
Her work within child mental health includes membership on the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) group that developed the standard outcome set for young people depression/anxiety. She contributed the child psychiatric nursing chapter to the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) e-Textbook of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Delaney is editor for the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing.
