Research Areas
John W. Burns, PhD, conducts research on biopsychosocial conceptualizations of chronic pain. His research falls into three broad areas:
- Investigating the degree to which psychosocial factors (particularly anger and marital conflict) influence acute and chronic pain intensity
- Examining the underlying physiological pathways (particularly endogenous opioid function) by which psychosocial factors exert effects on pain and function
- Examining the therapeutic mechanisms by which psychosocial treatments for chronic pain reduce pain and improve function
