Family caregivers
Ellen Carbonell, MSW, is an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work and Program Manager in Social Work and Community Health at Rush University Medical Center. She brings her years of experience working with chronic illnesses, caregiver support and clinical work as she develops and oversees programs for patients and caregivers, provides clinical consultation, and sees patients in psychotherapy at Rush. Carbonell served most recently as Associate Director of Family Programs for the Alzheimer’s Association’s national office, where she was responsible for working with chapters to develop and produce dementia-related programs for implementation nationwide, and oversaw caregiver and early-stage support group programs for the Association. There, she also trained chapters throughout the country on using these resources, and delivered webinars to Fortune 500 companies nationally and internationally. Trained as a clinical social worker, Carbonell has over 40 years of experience working with individual and family programs in mental health, substance abuse, vocational, educational, clergy and health care settings. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Illinois, and is an Adjunct Faculty Member in the graduate school of social work at Loyola University and in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Rush.
