Research and Scholarship

We are fortunate to have Najia Shakoor, MD as the scholarly activity director for our residency. Shakoor brings a unique set of skills to the job including her own accomplishments as a researcher, her skills as a teacher, and her experience as a mentorship leader within the medical center. In addition to curriculum development, Shakoor’s primary role is to facilitate and monitor our residents’ interaction with their scholarly activity mentors. The pursuit of scholarship is a core activity of our department and residency program. All residents are expected to engage in scholarly activity – each choosing an area of their own personal interest. This past academic year all of our graduating residents participated in some sort of scholarly activity resulting in 51 conference presentations and 13 original publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In order to educate our residents on this important facet of training we have developed a Residents as Scholars, or RAS, curriculum that spans all 3 years of residency. This curriculum begins in September of the intern year with a mandatory retreat to introduce new residents to the basics of scholarly activities. The retreat also includes faculty and resident panels discussing past and present projects. In addition to the didactic component of our program, research block electives during the second and third years of training are encouraged.

We also offer a Master’s in Clinical Research to interested residents.
