The Bachelor of Sciences (BS) in Health Sciences degree program prepares students to pursue careers in health care. Small cohorts and the teacher-practitioner model guide students towards success during, and after the program. Students can tailor coursework by choosing classes that focus on leadership and community wellness, and/or the scientific side of health care (pre-med, pre-nursing, pre-PA). Between 2015 and 2020, 72% of the BS in Health Sciences students were accepted into a doctorate or masters level programs. Of the students who pursued graduate level education, 25% were accepted into Nursing, 9% into Medicine, 9% into Physician Assistant Studies, 9% into Health Administration, and 7% into Occupational Therapy, to name a few.

What type of work will be done through this curriculum?

The core curriculum for this program includes classes to introduce the variety of health professions to students. Core classes are also about health care ethics, writing professionally, research and statistical methods. Students then can choose among electives that pertain to specific medical sciences and community wellness. At RUSH, students in every program are given the skills and education to become leaders in whatever profession they pursue.

You will complete a medical science-based or leadership and community wellness-based curriculum.

The medical sciences concentration will prepare you for graduate health care degree programs that require or suggest a bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite for admission, such as the following:

The leadership and community wellness concentration will prepare you for any graduate health care or community leadership degree programs or career advancement for established health care professionals, such as the following:

  • Health administration programs
  • Social work and counseling programs
  • Public health programs

How long does the BS in Health Sciences program take to complete?

Typically, the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program can be completed in 21 months if students attend full-time. However, since this program is a great option for students who have already begun a career and would like to return to school for further training, this program can also be completed doing coursework part-time. Students enter the program with a minimum of 60 credit hours in prerequisite courses, and complete 60 credit hours in upper-division coursework at RUSH to complete the degree.

What education is required to be eligible for this program?

Students only need to obtain 60 credit hours in prerequisite courses before starting this program. These classes include college algebra, English composition, humanities, physical, life and social sciences. An associate’s degree is not required for program eligibility.

Health Sciences Career Outlook

Depending on the job, post grads can go directly into medical research or a number of health care fields. Most graduates continue their health care education. Alumni have gone into careers as physician assistants, nurses, management in health systems, counselors and occupational therapists, to name a few.
