The Medical Physics & Informatics Group at Rush University System for Health partners with radiologists, technologists, clinicians, researchers, and operational leaders to ensure the safe, effective, and innovative use of imaging technologies across the health system.

Clinical Medical Physics

We support the safe and effective operation of imaging equipment throughout the enterprise, including CT, MRI, mammography and breast imaging, radiography and fluoroscopy, image-guided interventions, ultrasound, SPECT, PET imaging, and radiopharmaceutical therapies.

Our physicists perform equipment acceptance testing, annual evaluations, quality assurance, protocol optimization, and troubleshooting to support imaging excellence and regulatory compliance.

Radiation Safety

We provide leadership and oversight for radiation safety programs across Rush, including Radiation Safety Committee support, fluoroscopy dose management, patient radiation dose monitoring and optimization, regulatory compliance and accreditation support, staff education and training, and review of radiation-related incidents.

Imaging Informatics

Our team bridges clinical practice and technology by helping design, implement, and optimize imaging information systems, including PACS and enterprise imaging, DICOM and HL7 integrations, reporting and workflow solutions, vendor-neutral archives, interoperability initiatives, data governance, and analytics.

We work closely with Digital & Information Services and clinical stakeholders to improve efficiency, reliability, and accessibility of imaging data.

3D Printing/Post Processing & AR/VR

Our 3D Printing/Post Processing and AR/VR services help clinicians translate complex imaging data into practical tools for patient care, education, procedural planning, and research. The group supports advanced image segmentation, quantitative post-processing, 3D anatomical model creation, augmented reality visualization, and immersive educational experiences.

The AR & 3D Lab, led by Alejandro Espinoza Orias in collaboration with departmental partners including George Henry, continues to expand clinical awareness and access to 3D printing and augmented reality capabilities across Rush. Artificial Intelligence & Clinical Innovation

Rush is committed to evaluating and deploying AI responsibly to improve patient care and operational efficiency. Our group leads initiatives involving AI governance and oversight, clinical algorithm evaluation, workflow integration, model performance monitoring, vendor assessment and validation, and outcome and value measurement.

Research & Innovation

Our faculty and physicists participate in research programs that advance medical imaging, including Medical Physics 3.0, AI in radiology, imaging informatics, radiation dose optimization, image quality assessment, human observer performance, advanced quantitative imaging, and clinical workflow improvement.

Education & Training

As part of Rush's academic mission, our group supports medical student education, radiology resident training, medical physics instruction, technologist education, continuing professional development, faculty mentorship, and research mentorship.

Quality & Accreditation

We partner with imaging practices across the enterprise to maintain excellence in quality and regulatory compliance. Support includes ACR accreditation activities, image quality programs, peer review initiatives, performance improvement projects, clinical protocol optimization, and quality metrics development.

Mark Supanich is Director of Diagnostic Medical Physics & Informatics at Rush. His areas of responsibility include CT, informatics and artificial intelligence, image-guided interventional equipment, radioembolizations, and mammography.

Alejandro Espinoza Orias serves as Manager of the 3D and Augmented Reality Lab. His areas of responsibility include 3D printing, 3D post-processing, and augmented and virtual reality.

Martha Silva is a Medical Physics Assistant II who supports daily operations for the Medical Physics team, including coordination, documentation, scheduling, equipment records, quality program support, and communication across imaging stakeholders.
