Commencement Information for Students

Commencement Ceremony Admission

You may invite as many guests as you wish. Seating is reserved for graduates; guests may seat themselves on a first-come, first-served basis.


The ceremony will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and last approximately two hours. Doors to the pavilion will open at 1 p.m. to allow family and friends to be seated. All aisles leading to the seats consist of stairs. If your guests need accommodations, the UIC staff will be able to assist inside the main doors of the pavilion.  If you have questions about guest accommodations, please email the Commencement committee

Parking and Transportation

There will be parking available at the UIC Pavilion as well as at Rush University, with a free shuttle service to the UIC Pavilion. Detailed information will be made available closer to the ceremony date. 


All students participating in the ceremony will need to arrive at the UIC Pavilion Parking Garage (525 S. Racine Ave.) by 12:30 p.m., on the first level, west side. Signs and greeters will help direct you. Faculty and staff will be there to help line up all students.

Bag Check for Graduates

Bag check will not be provided for graduates or guests at the ceremony and large items are not allowed into the ceremony.  Please make prior arrangements for your purses, bags and personal items.  


Security from Rush University Medical Center and UIC Pavilion will be present to ensure the event is safe and secure for participants and guests.  

Prohibited Items

UIC Pavilion does not allow outside food, strollers, balloons, noise makers/air horns or paraphernalia of any kind. Book bags and large purses are also not allowed.

Graduation Dress Code

There is no formal dress code. Most graduates wear business-like attire under their robes.

Accommodations for Accessibility

Entrance to the UIC Pavilion is ADA accessible, as are all restrooms. Additionally, the UIC Pavilion has designated ADA parking spots. Cars will need to provide their own ADA parking placard. 

Service animals are permitted in the Pavilion, but need to be on a leash and under control at all times. The owner is responsible for cleaning up after the animal outside the Pavilion. 

An ASL interpreter is visible via screen at all designated seating areas. Large print programs will be available at all entrances. 

You will have the opportunity to request accessibility accommodations on the Intent to Graduate form.  For information regarding guest accessibility, please visit Commencement Information for Guests. If you have additional questions regarding accessiblity at the ceremony please email the Commencement committee. Staff and faculty with mobility concerns about pre-ceremony line-up may also email the Commencement committee. 

International Students

Rush University will provide letters of support for visitor visa applications to family member of students, staff and faculty participating in the Commencement ceremony. Please complete a 2018 Commencement Invitation Request for each letter you would like written. Email International Student Services with any questions you may have. 


Please feel free to bring your cameras to take photos. The aisles need to remain clear at all times, especially during the processional, ceremony and recessional. Therefore, family and friends will not be allowed in the aisles or on the main floor during the ceremony. Family pictures may be taken immediately after the ceremony.  Please be reminded, regalia needs to be returned to the UIC Parking Garage immediately following the ceremony. 

The Rush University Commencement committee has arranged for a professional photographer to take a picture of each graduate as they cross the stage. Participants will be able to order prints directly from the photographer.

Regalia Pickup and Return

Please see the regalia page for the regalia distribution schedule and other specific details. Regalia must be returned to the UIC Parking Garage immediately following the ceremony. 

Ceremony Live Stream

The Commencement ceremony will be streamed live for family and friends who are unable to attend.  As the date of Commencement approaches, we will provide a link for family and friends to view the ceremony live. Check back on the commencement website for more details.

Smoking at the Pavilion

The UIC Pavilion is a smoke-free environment, but they do offer a designated smoking area outside Gate 5 during the event. The smoking area is monitored by Pavilion staff for re-entry.

Dining near the Pavilion

UIC is close to a variety of fine dining restaurants. Greek Town, Little Italy and University Village all offer exciting eating establishments within walking distance.
