Black’s area of focus is in public health with the goal of identifying and containing emerging and multi-drug resistant pathogens among poorly resourced healthcare facilities. In collaboration with the Rush Prevention and Intervention Epicenter and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black has worked to add resources and capacity in infection control in high risk transmission settings in the Chicago metropolitan region. These activities have served as a model for strategic interventions in other regions. As medical director with the Communicable Disease Program at a major metropolitan health department, she has experience in foodborne outbreaks, legionnaire’s disease investigations as well as developing a regional emergency preparedness response to infectious diseases of high consequence, including Ebola.
Research Summary: Black’s publications include surveillance of Clostridium difficile ribotypes in the Chicago area, the emergence of Candida auris in the Chicago area, and outbreak investigations of Legionnaire’s disease, rotavirus among adults, and foodborne diseases.
In her position as Medical Director of the Communicable Disease Program in the Chicago Department of Public Health Black focuses on healthcare associated infections and infection control at healthcare institutions. The Communicable Disease Program conducts surveillance and outbreak investigations, facilitates testing, and responds to emerging infectious disease threats including Candida auris and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Black is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. She completed undergraduate training at Cornell University Medical School at Temple University, and residency and fellowship studies at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Black practiced clinical infectious diseases medicine for 6 years at Rush University Medical Center after completing a fellowship with a focus on hospital associated infections and emerging infectious diseases and continues to serve as Attending Physician at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
