Chen is actively involved in both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical research with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of brain aneurysms in women. He is also a national PI for an aspiration stroke thrombectomy study. He is the local principal investigator for the following actively enrolling studies: SELECT-2, PROST, PHIL dAVF, ENDOLOW and SURF. He also consults with neurointerventional startup companies evaluating artificial intelligence technology, robotics and medical therapies for stroke.
Michael Chen, MD is a Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology who has been in practice at Rush for over 14 years. He received his medical degree in his home state at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. His training consists of neurology residency, stroke and neuroendovascular surgery fellowships at Yale, Harvard and Columbia respectively. Chen’s practice focuses on minimally invasive treatments of brain and spinal cord vascular disease. Specifically, he is involved in the study and treatment of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spine, intracranial atherosclerosis, carotid artery stenosis, acute stroke thrombolysis, and preoperative tumor embolization of the brain and spine. He has been awarded a Brain Aneurysm Foundation grant to study cerebral aneurysms in women. He has also led hospital initiatives that combine checklists and electronic medical records to further improve many quality of care metrics for the patient with cerebrovascular disease.

Chen has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and also serves as a senior editor for the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery. He currently serves as President-Elect for the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. He works actively as a scientific advisory board member for several patient-advocacy foundations including the Niekro Foundation and the Bee Foundation. He has previously served on the Rush University Medical Staff Executive Committee.
