Mary C. Massa, MD, has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1978, the American Board of Dermatology in 1982, and the American Board of Dermatopathology since 1983. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1973 from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ and her MD in 1976 from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL. She completed an internship in Medicine at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, IL in 1977.
Massa performed a residency in medicine at Loyola University Hospital from 1977 to 1979 and a residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, from 1979 to 1982. She completed a fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Chicago in 1983.
Her academic appointments began in 1982 as an instructor at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN, and from 1983 to 1987, she served as assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine. She obtained several other positions at Loyola, including assistant professor of pathology (1986-1987), associate professor medicine and pathology (1987-1997), and full professor of medicine and pathology (1997-1998).
Massa’s non-academic career began at the VA Hospital in Hines Illinois as an attending physician in 1984. She served as director of the dermatology division at Loyola University from 1986 to 1998. She was also on the consulting medical staff at HCA Riveredge Hospital in Illinois from 1989 to 1991. She was the director of the division of dermatology medical service at the VA Hospital from 1992 to 1996.
Massa has been a professor of dermatology at Rush University Medical Center since 1998. She has published numerous articles, books and abstracts, and has conducted several poster presentations and over 100 lectures. Her research interest is in laser treatments with a special interest in cosmetic dermatology.
