MD, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
Dr. Karen H. Ma is interested and invested in the field of colorectal cancer, in particular screening, prevention, and surveillance of colorectal polyps. During her training she studied with Dr. Joshua Melson, a national expert on serrated polyps, and Dr. Faraz Bishehsari, a physician-scientist with expertise in colon carcinogenesis. She has experience with design and the management of large cohort studies with long-term follow-up, which is needed when evaluating CRC risk after colonoscopic polypectomy and interval cancer development. Her prior research work focused on polyps with advanced risk features including neoplastic risk of sessile serrated polyps and she was recently part of a large collaborative multicenter study evaluating risk of future neoplasia in patients with diminutive polyps with advanced histologic features that was accepted in Gastroenterology. After completing her fellowship, she was recruited to stay onboard as faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine and is continuing to dedicate her research career to CRC prevention.
