Restorative justice practices in academic medicine; LGBTQ+ education; physician communication; adjustment to chronic illness
As associate dean of medical student affairs at Rush Medical College, Jay M. Behel, PhD, oversees the strategic planning and implementation of co-curricular programming in the medical college including important collaborations related to student well-being and the learning environment. Additionally, he teaches in the Rush Leadership Academy and is the LGBTQ education director for Rush. Behel is a clinical psychologist and directs Geriatric & Rehabilitation Psychology at Rush University Medical Center. He is also the project coordinator for Rx for RJ, an international collaborative working to bring restorative justice practices to academic healthcare. Behel completed his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University with majors in English and psychology. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Auburn University and then completed a residency and fellowship at Rush. Behel has published and presented on a range of topics including adjustment to chronic illness, physician communication, restorative justice and LGBTQ issues.
