Cynthia L. Comella, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Smith College with bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and completed her medical training at the University of Cincinnati Medical College. She did her internal medicine and neurology residencies at Rush University Medical Center where she also completed fellowships both in movement disorders and sleep disorders. She is an active member of the Movement Disorders Society, with service on the Executive Committee, the Congress Scientific Programming Committee, the Continuing Medical Education committee and as the first Chair of the Education committee. She was the first woman officer in the MDS, and served as Secretary of the society. She currently chairs the MDS Publications Oversight committee and the Leadership Task force. One of her interests is in the practice of leadership, and she recently completed leadership training at the Sonoma Systems Leadership Challenge program. She has been active in the American Academy of Neurology, serving on the Science Committee, Chair of the Education committee, the Annual Meeting subcommittee, editorial board of Continuum and the Board of Directors of the AAN institute and chairs the Women in Leadership task force. She has been active in dystonia research, working to develop new rating scales for dystonia and evaluating the safety and efficacy of oral medications and botulinum toxins for dystonia. She chairs the Dystonia Study Group and serves on the Steering committee of the Dystonia Coalition. Dr. Comella is the author or co-author of more than 165 articles, reviews, research papers, books, and book chapters related to Movement disorders. She is been very interested in Restless Legs Syndrome and has recently has written several review articles related to RLS treatment.
