Charles L. Hebert, MD, is a dually trained physician who is board certified in internal medicine and psychiatry and carries joint appointments in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Rush University. Dr. Hebert completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. After graduating from medical school, he competed a five-year combined residency in internal medicine and psychiatry in 2010. He has been on faculty at Rush University ever since. Hebert is currently the Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service and also serves as a hospitalist in internal medicine. His clinical expertise includes management of a wide array of emotional and behavioral problems that emerge in patients with medical, surgical, oncologic, gynecological, and neurological illness.
Hebert's research interests include development of psychiatric educational platforms for nonpsychiatric clinicians as well as investigation of conditions at the med/psych interface, including mood disorders in the medically ill, impact of psychiatric comorbidity on course of medical illness, functional neurological syndromes, and others. He has also served as a consultant and subject matter expert on behavioral health disaster readiness for the Chicago Healthcare System Coalition for Preparedness and Response (CHSCPR) and authored the Behavioral Health Annex adopted by this organization advising healthcare facilities in the Chicagoland metropolitan area on psychological and behavioral health readiness for disasters. Hebert has been an invited speaker at the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry as well as other national and international organizational meetings, including the Society of General Internal Medicine, to discuss integration of behavioral health in medical settings. His work in the area of disaster preparedness and response has been presented at the World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine's biennial congress in Brisbane, Australia in 2019 among other international venues.
