Mokhlesi is an international authority in the field of sleep-disordered breathing and hypoventilation syndromes. His clinical research program is collaborative in nature and he works closely with several investigators and research networks around the globe. His research includes clinical studies exploring the impact of sleep and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in adults and youth, clinical trials exploring the intersection of sleep-disordered breathing and various pulmonary/critical care disorders such as acute-on-chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure in the ICU (ie, obesity hypoventilation syndrome) and COPD (ie, overlap of OSA and COPD exacerbation). To better elucidate how OSA may be a risk fator in the other comorbidities, he is interested in translational research (ie, murine models) exploring the role of intermittent hypoxemia and hypercapnia in pulmonary hypertension, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary fibrosis, renal injury and cancer progression. Throughout his career he has also leveraged large institutional and national databases to perform epidemiologic research.
