The ophthalmology residency is a three-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited program. Our mission is to train residents to provide excellent medical and surgical care for patients with all types of eye disease.

The RUSH Ophthalmology residency program is small, with only three residents training each year, but therein lies its strongest advantage: RUSH residents become true comprehensive ophthalmologists on July 1st of their first year, with the ability to follow their patients as their own patients throughout the entire residency. Few academic programs offer this continuity-of-care.  A true family atmosphere among residents and dedicated faculty enhances the learning experience. RUSH is a great place to be an ophthalmologist. It is an even better place to train!

RUSH University Medical Center offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a range of conditions. Each resident averages 500 total procedures, including 200 primary cataract procedures. RUSH’s diverse patient population spans cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic lines and draws from across the city, surrounding suburbs and greater Midwest.

The department seeks applicants who are dedicated to the learning challenges, and who have strong personal and ethical principles.
