Rush Otolaryngologists treat approximately 1,100 adult and pediatric inpatients each year at Rush University Medical Center addressing conditions that range from head and neck cancer to severe hearing loss. The Department's average daily inpatient census is approximately five. Approximately 3,200 surgical procedures are performed through the department each year providing residents with extensive surgical experience. Residents gain experience in otology, head and neck oncology, head and neck reconstruction, facial plastic surgery, adult and pediatric bronchoesophagology and the treatment of patients with craniofacial anomalies and maxillofacial trauma, as well as head and neck laser surgery and cryosurgery.
Speech and hearing systems are evaluated and treated in a multidisciplined manner in conjunction with the Section of Communicative Disorders. Services provided for hearing disabilities include surgical, medical and non-medical rehabilitative management.

Each Resident is evaluated by the attending faculty on a bi-annual basis. The evaluations are discussed individually with each resident by the program director. Additionally, the residents anonymously evaluate each faculty member on a bi-annual basis. These evaluations are sent to each faculty member and they are invited to discuss any issues with the department chairman and the program director.
