Our Approach

You learn from faculty who are active practitioners at a top-tier academic medical center, RUSH University Medical Center.

This means many program advisers and clinical faculty are practicing nurse practitioners who have clinical experience that will enrich your learning.

We offer tracks for both bachelor’s and master’s-prepared nurses.

Program Length and Location

Our program takes two (full-time) to 3 ½ years (part-time) and is available to local and distance learners.

Most coursework takes place online. Some are offered online and in-person.

Students must be on campus for the following:

  • Program orientation: One-day, on-campus orientation
  • Physical diagnosis: Two to three days on-campus lab
  • CNS management clinical: Four to six days per year for clinical validation and simulation
  • DNP project problem statement presentation: Mid-program and usually lasts a day
  • DNP project proposal: Just before beginning the DNP project implementation and usually lasts one day
  • DNP project final presentation: Last term before graduation and usually lasts one day

Clinical experience

Clinical sites are available at RUSH and throughout the Chicago area. Distance students work with faculty to find practicum sites.

We have successfully negotiated distance practicums, but success is not guaranteed. Due to state regulations, we can’t guarantee clinical practica placement if you move after matriculating.

Certification

Our curriculum is approved by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

The approval process requires that programs meet educational eligibility compliance with the following:

  • Consensus model for advanced practice registered nurse practice
  • The National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s criteria for APRN programs (2012)
