Commencement 2021 Frequently Asked Questions


Virtual Commencement 

  • Rush University’s 49th Commencement will be virtual on May 1, 2021 at 2 PM CST. In addition to conferring degrees and celebrating the graduating Class of 2021, the virtual commencement ceremony will feature a University Marshal, Student Commencement Speaker, Commencement Address and traditional and virtual elements. 
I have not received any emails regarding this year’s commencement, is there something that I need to do?  
  • After completing the Intent to Graduate Form, you will receive a confirmation email with details about graduation and the virtual commencement, which will be held virtually on Saturday, May 1, 2021. Please note, certificate-seeking students are not eligible to participate in commencement. If you have any questions about your degree/certificate conferral please email Registrars_Office@rush.edu. For general  Commencement questions email RU_Commencement@rush.edu.  
I will not be able to participate in the virtual commencement ceremony. Do I need to confirm this with someone? 
  • If you do not wish to, or are unable to participate in the 2021 virtual commencement ceremony, please email RU_Commencement@rush.edu
If I chose not to participate in the virtual commencement will I be removed from the virtual commencement ceremony and the official commemorative program booklet?  
  • If you choose not to participate in the virtual commencement ceremony you will be removed from the virtual commencement program. Your name however will appear in the official commencement program booklet.
What happens if I did not complete the Graduate Information survey? 
  • If you did not complete the Graduation Information Survey or notify RU_Commencement that you do not want to participate, your name and degree will still appear in the Virtual Commencement program, and a photo of your Rush University ID photo will be used. Your name will still appear in the formal commencement booklet and you will receive regalia. 
Will the ceremony be accessible to those who are hearing-impaired or hard of hearing?  
  • Yes. Closed captioning will be available during the ceremony and on any posted recordings of the ceremony.
Will the ceremony be recorded?  
  • Yes. The ceremony will be recorded and posted on the Rush University Youtube channel in the weeks following the ceremony.
I did not receive a confirmation response when I submitted my Intent to Graduate Form, is there something that I need to do?   
  • Students that complete the Intent to Graduate Form, will receive a confirmation email with details about graduation and the virtual commencement ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please email  Registrars_Office@rush.edu

Regalia and Diploma 

Do students have to purchase their regalia? 
  • For 2021 Commencement Ceremony, the University is providing the regalia to the students free of charge to help graduates commemorate and celebrate their tremendous accomplishments. All graduates, regardless of participation will receive regalia that will be sent to their address of record with the Office of the Registrar. 
What’s included in the regalia package?  
  • Your regalia order will include Rush University gown, degree-specific hood, graduate cap with signet tassel, and honor cord where applicable.
How can I confirm the address I have on file? What if I need to change my address? 
  • You can check the address you have on file through the Registrar’s Office using the Address/Phone Change Form in Self-Service.
  • Note: Due to vendor logistics, once the official order has been placed you can no longer change your delivery address for regalia.
When can I expect to receive my regalia in the mail? 
  • All graduates can anticipate their regalia arriving before the virtual commencement ceremony.
I will be moving before commencement; how can I ensure that I receive my regalia? 
  • Regalia will be sent to the address on file through the Registrar’s Office.  Due to vendor logistics, you can no longer change your delivery address for regalia once it is ordered by the University.
  • Regalia will be sent to the address on file through the Registrar’s Office using the Address/Phone Change Form in Self-Service. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to stop the delivery. Please email RU_Commencement@rush.edu to confirm the status of your delivery and we will be happy to assist you.
When can I expect to receive my diploma in the mail? 

Photos

To help share your status as a Rush Graduate, Class of 2021 filters have been created for social media posts. Graduates are encouraged to take pictures while celebrating their accomplishments, using the hashtag #RushGrad2021. Tagged photos may be incorporated into the virtual ceremony.

I would like to take photos on campus with my regalia.
I am having issues with the Rush University Commencement Graduate Information Form. I cannot hit submit without submitting a digital photo.  
  • Students encountering issues with submitting their form/photo should email RU_Commencement@rush.edu and we will be happy to assist. 
I’m having issues with the voice recording of my name, the file is not being accepted. What should I do?  
  • Students encountering issues with submitting their form/photo should email RU_Commencement@rush.edu and we will be happy to assist.

If you’d like to participate in the Rush University Commencement Ceremony collage video, please check out best practices for recording here and upload your submission to this folder.

  • Tips for Recording a Thank You Video
    •    Audio will be used.
    •    If you choose to write a message on a poster board, write in bold all caps lettering using dark colors.
    •    Hold the sign still for at least five seconds before moving it around.
    •    When moving your sign, move so it can still be read.
