Gary Chmielewski, MD, is an associate professor of surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He graduated from the Loyola University of Chicago-Stritch School of Medicine in 1988 and went on to train at Wayne State University for his general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. He has been at Rush since 2011, before which he was an attending thoracic surgeon at William Beaumont Hospital in various locations around Michigan. Chmielewski is associate director of the cardiothoracic residency program and is safety officer for the department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at RUMC. His research interests include surgical quality and process improvement as well as the advancement of robotic surgical techniques in thoracic surgery. He regularly lectures to communities in the Chicago area and researchers across the nation on the management of lung cancer and advances in lung cancer treatments, as well as treatments for Barrett’s esophagus.
