Masako Mayahara, PhD, RN, is a clinical expert in the area of pain management in hospice and end of life care with certification as a hospice and palliative nurse.
Her research focuses on facilitating pain and analgesic management by hospice caregivers. She is pilot testing a hospice caregiver training program which assists caregivers in administration of analgesics in home hospice settings.
Mayahara currently directs the Interdisciplinary Studies in Palliative Care courses offered to nursing, medical and other health care students. Through this and community venues, she provides interdisciplinary education to health care providers about the importance of pain management for patients with chronic life threatening illness across the life span.
She is the past president of the Chicagoland chapter of Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and the Immediate past chair of Midwest Nursing Research Society Palliative care and End-of-Life Research Interest Group.
