Welcome to RUSH Emergency Medicine! As a three-year training program, we welcomed our first class in 2017 and match twelve new residents per year. Our academic Emergency Department sees 72,000 patients a year in a state-of-the-art, 40,000 square foot ED which opened in 2012. RUSH Emergency Medicine proudly serves one of the most diverse urban communities in the country.

Our objective is to train outstanding clinicians who are prepared to handle any ED environment and equip them with the skills to be efficient, capable and compassionate Emergency Physicians. As a RUSH resident, you will be trained in one of the most modern Emergency Departments in one of the highest-ranked academic hospitals in the country. Our faculty are experienced educators, with expertise in simulation, ultrasound, toxicology, addiction medicine, administration, research and informatics. Our brand-new simulation center, located next to our department offices and staffed by RUSH Emergency Physicians, is fully incorporated into the didactic curriculum. We have longstanding programs in disaster management, and RUSH is a designated mass casualty receiving facility. Existing fellowships in ultrasound, simulation, informatics, administration, and addiction medicine are a testament to the teaching mission in our department.

We strive to uphold the mission of RUSH University by creating a learning and working community built on principles of equity, inclusion and diversity. In our department students, faculty, residents and fellows, including individuals from underrepresented populations, different cultural and religious backgrounds, and those identifying as LGBTQIA feel welcome, supported, and valued. We recruit applicants who bring with them diverse life stories and can reflect the patient population we serve. RUSH Emergency Medicine encourages the development of cultural competence, recognizing implicit bias, and understanding our local population through didactic workshops and simulated patient encounters. We actively encourage discussion and engage in difficult conversations of race, gender bias, social determinants of health, and how physicians can improve the health of our patients and communities.

We seek applicants who are highly motivated to actively engage in their education. Our program is built around resident inclusion and responsiveness; we recruit applicants who embody a sense of adventure, a pioneering spirit, and a willingness to help shape the program for future learners – qualities essential to be a successful resident at RUSH.

Thank you for your interest in RUSH. We look forward to welcoming you to Chicago and to our Emergency Medicine residency program!
