Chair, Department of Dermatology

Welcome to RUSH Dermatology, a national leader in skin care. As Department Chair, I am honored to lead a team of outstanding clinicians, educators, and researchers who advance the field of dermatology through their commitment, compassion, and creativity. Spanning nine clinical sites throughout Chicagoland, we are dedicated to providing our community with the highest level of skin care across the full spectrum of dermatology, including medical, surgical, and cosmetic services. In our residency training program, we aim to provide extraordinary teaching and build the dermatology leaders of tomorrow. And with our advanced research, we seek to discover novel insights and pioneer new treatments for cutaneous disease. Indeed, at RUSH Dermatology, we aspire to bring excellence to all.

History

RUSH Dermatology was a founding leader of dermatology in both Chicago and the United States. In 1873, RUSH appointed the first Chicago Lecturer in Dermatology, James Nevens Hyde, a key figure in the early American dermatological community. Dr. Hyde helped establish the American Dermatological Association in 1876 and became the inaugural president of the Chicago Dermatological Society in 1903. After dedicating 31 years as a Professor in Dermatology, Dr. Hyde's legacy continued through successors like Dr. Frederick Malkinson in 1970 and Dr. Michael Tharp in 1995. I was honored to follow in these footsteps in 2021.

Patient Care

RUSH Dermatology is dedicated to providing the highest quality of comprehensive and specialized care for patients with skin, hair, nail, and mucous membranes diseases. Our faculty, recognized nationally and internationally, have a wide array of expertise in general dermatology, surgical procedures, cosmetics, and complex medical dermatology. Our interests include atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, cutaneous oncology, skin cancer screening and prevention, autoimmune blistering diseases, connective tissue diseases, hidradenitis suppurativa, vasculitis, vitiligo, and beyond. The department also offers an extensive menu of aesthetic services and procedures. We provide top-tier dermatologic care, with more than 30,000 patient visits annually, at nine different locations: the RUSH main campus Professional Office Building, the Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building, RUSH Lincoln Park, RUSH Oak Brook, RUSH Oak Park, RUSH River North, RUSH South Loop, and RUSH West Loop.

Education and Training

We are highly dedicated to the education of medical students, residents, and other health care providers in the diagnosis and management of cutaneous disease. With nine residents in our program, we maintain an excellent faculty-to-resident ratio. Our teaching approach is immersive, fostering autonomy and critical thinking. Learners have rich experiences in medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and inpatient dermatology. The program emphasizes surgical skills, dermatopathology, and cosmetic treatments, ensuring well-rounded training.

Research

Dedicated to advancing our understanding of skin disorders, our department actively engages in basic, clinical, and translational research. Our focus includes exploring the pathogenesis of immune-mediated conditions and conducting epidemiological studies and educational research. We welcome students seeking research opportunities to reach out to us. We encourage students seeking research opportunities to reach out to us.
