Sports Medicine Fellowship

The sports medicine fellowship is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited program preparing fellows for dynamic careers in private practice, sports-based practices and academic affiliated positions. Centered in the RUSH University Medical Center Division of Sports Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, our program is led by exceptional faculty and supported with premier facilities and equipment.

Our program features an active clinical component and comprehensive curriculum. You'll master state-of-the art techniques, working closely with nationally recognized faculty and other leaders who will guide you in the diagnosis and treatment of sports medicine injuries.

As a busy tertiary referral center, RUSH attracts a diverse patient population from the city, suburbs and surrounding states, introducing fellows to a wide range of challenging cases, conditions and patients.

Renowned for orthopedic excellence, our orthopedic specialists are team physicians for the elite athletes of the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Fire, the Chicago Blaze women's basketball team, the Chicago RUSH arena football team, the Chicago Steel semi-pro hockey team, DePaul University, and many local high school teams. Fellows often play a role in providing preventive and acute care in training camps and on the field.

The academic year begins on August 1st and ends on July 31st.  These dates allow fellows time to prepare for written board examinations, to move and to get acclimated to Chicago.  A fellow's salary is commensurate with a PGY-6 level. Medical and disability insurance is provided which begins at the start of the fellowship. Parking is provided. Twenty days of vacation/meeting/ interview time is allowed. Housing is not provided.

How to apply

We accept five fellows each year. Applicants must have successfully completed a U.S. or Canadian residency program prior to the fellowship year and be eligible for permanent Illinois licensure.

We participate in the Sports Medicine Fellowship Match sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Arthroscopy Association of North America and administered through the San Francisco Matching Program. Please visit the AOSSM website or the SF Match website for current application information and any other documents or materials needed.

Deadlines

Our firm deadline for completed applications is December 1 of the application year.  Interviews will be held in accordance with the AOSSM assigned regional time frame for each application year.

Selection criteria and interviews

Each year the application pool is more and more competitive.  We receive over 100 applications for our five positions.  We consider the applicant's academic accomplishments, letters of recommendation and personal character when making selections. Candidates selected for interview are invited to come to Chicago for an evening social gathering with faculty and current fellows followed by a day of one-on-one interviews with sports medicine faculty, meet and greets with current fellows and a facilities tour.
