Wrenetha Julion
Initially frustrated with the perception by many of non-resident black fathers as “deadbeat dads,” Wrenetha Julion, PhD, MPH, RN, professor of nursing at Rush University, has spent years researching the roles and attitudes of these men in an effort to better understand the many challenges they face to being a part of their children’s lives and to seek ways to help them connect.

A winner of multiple grants for her work, Julion first tackled the issue of paternal involvement in black communities while writing her doctoral dissertation at Rush. She has developed an intervention program, Building Bridges to Fatherhood, aimed at non-resident fathers that, if deemed effective, could be implemented nationwide.
