Monica is also the recipient of two additional A.N.D. scholarships : the Irene Jones Foundations Scholarship (2012-2013) and the Dietetics in Healthcare Communities Board Scholarship (2013-2014).
Nicci Brown is the recipient of two awards from the Academy Foundation this year, Nicci has earned the Patsy Jane O’Malley Memoria Scholarship for excelling in the field of dietetics and taking on leadership roles in 2013. Nicci is also an avid health and food blogger and was awarded this year’s Susan T Borra Fellowship in Nutrition Communication, a $5,000 award granted to support professional development in social media and health promotion. She is also the recipient of the CAND Outstanding Dietetic Student Award and Scholarship.
Kids Eat Right Grants
We are pleased to announce that two of our current students –Kristen Lach and Tess Sutter (class of 2013) have earned Kids Eat Right Grants this year. With the support of the Academy’s Kids Eat Right Foundation, all will be able to provide nutrition education to at-risk and underserved children and adolescents.
Rush Community Service Initiative Program’s (RCSIP) 1st Annual RU Engaged Service grants
The two grant categories are health projects that address problems identified in Rush’s Community Health Needs Assessment findings and projects that align with RCSIP’s healthcare career pipeline training for Chicago Public School students at the Medical Career Preparatory High School.

Recent Graduate Student Awards
Congratulations to our two recent graduates, Mae Walrath and Christine Steinmetz. Mae won the Outstanding Student of the Year award from the Chicago Dietetic Association, and Christine earned the Outstanding Student of the Year award from the North Suburban Dietetics Association. Both women were selected based on their exceptional academic achievement, demonstration of leadership, and professional potential. Erika Graham (class of 2012) –also has earned Kids Eat Right Grants this year.
A Prestigious Award to an Alum:
Rush nutrition graduate Erin McCarthy, MS, RD, CSSD is the recipient of the 30th annual Huddleson Award for the article in the March 2012 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “The Role of Diet and Nutrient Composition in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.”
The prestigious Huddleson Award honors a registered dietitian who was the lead author of a peer-reviewed article that made an important contribution to the dietetics profession and that was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics during the previous calendar year. The award carries a $1,000 honorarium, and the winner is invited to attend the Foundation dinner at the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo.
Erin currently works as a sports dietitian at the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation in Chicago. She specializes in adult weight management, sports and bariatric nutrition, and MNT for fatty liver disease.
