The Rush Medical College Alumni Association is pleased to announce the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient:  W. Ian Lipkin, MD '78

The Rush Medical College Alumni Association invites you to congratulate this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, W. Ian Lipkin, MD!

Throughout his career, Lipkin has made his mark on the medical community around the world. He is the director of the Center for Infection and Immunity and the John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Lipkin is internationally recognized for the development of molecular methods for microbial surveillance and discovery. His contributions include the first use of purely molecular methods to identify an infectious agent; the implication of the West Nile virus as the cause of the encephalitis in North America in 1999; service as an intermediary between the World Health Organization and the Chinese government and co-direction of SARS research efforts in China with former minister of health, Chen Zhu, during the 2003 SARS outbreak; and taking on the role of chief scientific adviser on the Steven Soderbergh film "Contagion." Lipkin currently serves on the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee to the Director.
