Rush faculty from the Advanced Public Health Nursing (APHN) program provide students with incredible opportunities to meet national and international leaders. Through these experiences, students have the opportunity to gain invaluable insight from political and social leaders in the public health arena who affect change.

Susan Swider, PhD, APHN-BC, is a professor and specialty coordinator of the college's APHN program. Over the past twenty years, her research has focused on program development and evaluation of community health workers and engaging urban communities in health promotion. In 2011, Swider was appointed as a member of President Obama's Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health, and recently attended two events with Rush nursing students.

Swider and a group of Rush nursing students with an interest in public health participated in an event with Naeema Al-Gasseer, PhD, RN, from the World Health Organization (WHO). Al-Gasseer is assistant regional director and WHO representative for Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Maureen Rabbitte (pictured right), a Rush MSN student in the advanced public health nursing program, met with U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin at a "Healthy Schools" event at Nathanael Greene Elementary School in Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood. The Healthy Schools Campaign launched their "Go for the Gold" program in 2010 as a way to support the various Chicago public schools attempting to meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s "HealthierUS School Challenge." The "HealthierUS School Challenge" is a cornerstone of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative.
