Program Structure

The PGY-1 year is now spent within the Department of Orthopaedics and involves the equivalent of one month of skills training throughout the PGY-1 year. The PGY-2 through PGY-5 years focus further on orthopaedics, in which the residents gain substantial experience in the diagnosis, management and treatment of all orthopaedic problems. All residents spend substantial time on adult reconstruction, sports medicine, pediatrics, trauma, oncology, hand, foot & ankle and spine rotations. The majority of the residency is spent at Rush University Medical Center; however, residents also rotate at John H. Stroger Hospital (Level I Trauma Center); Rockford Memorial Hospital and St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, IL; and Shriners Hospital for Children.

Education is one of the many strong points of the residency program. Rush is home to world class orthopedic surgeons that are leaders within their respective fields. Other surgeons travel great distances to hear many of them speak, whereas the residency program has the benefit of frequent interactive educational experiences with these same people. Conferences and lectures are held throughout each week in various formats on a wide range of topics.

The program emphasizes both basic and clinical research. A full-time staff of more than 35 research professionals, including nine PhDs, is constantly developing new cutting edge orthopedic projects. Rush is one of the best funded orthopedic departments in the country with multiple NIH grants as well as significant private funding. Collaboration with the talented research faculty enables residents to meet research requirements with high-quality translational and clinical research studies.
