Dr. Somberg's laboratory has been interested in determining parameters that reduce the pro-arrhythmic effects of anti-arrhythmic drugs.
Recent studies have shown that some drugs exhibit different effects at normal and low pH, affecting cardiac repolarization and conduction while other drugs such as amiodarone do not do this. Studies are ongoing to determine the mechanism behind these changes.
Additionally, Dr. Somberg's laboratory has emphasized the separation of useful pharmacologic effects of drugs through chiral separation.
Studies with digoxin have found that chiral separation leads to distinct pharmacologic differences that may be clinically useful. Studies employing chiral separation are undergoing to separate useful drug effects from toxic effects.
