Welcome to the RUSH University Radiation Oncology Residency Program!

The Department of Radiation Oncology offers a four-year residency training program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program accommodates a total of six residents (2 per year, with a skip year every 4th year).

One of our positions is an advanced match (i.e. after satisfactory completion of an internship year elsewhere) and the other position is categorical (integrated one-year internship at RUSH University Medical Center, with exposure to various oncologic specialties). All positions are offered only through the annual National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The program combines structured didactic and hands-on clinical instruction in patient care, medical physics and radiation biology. Our program curriculum is rationally designed to allow you progressive autonomy in your training, which increases with the successful completion of each academic year. It is our goal to train our residents to become excellent physicians first, then oncologists, and finally radiation oncologists.

Our residents train at a state-of-the-art academic medical campus, which includes the RUMC Tower and the recently opened RAB Outpatient Cancer Center.  This provides residents with a broad spectrum of inpatient and outpatient oncology care as well as a broad range of treatment modalities. The residents’ office, located within our administrative area, is equipped with individual workstations, as well as reference materials, computer hardware/software, and transcription equipment.

Residents receive department support to pursue research projects that align with their academic and professional interests.  The department of Radiation Oncology has multiple active research projects domains. Click here for more information about research opportunities.  Residents are encouraged and receive funding to present their research at regional, national, and international meetings.  Recent residents have attended ASTRO, ACRO, ESTRO, ESMO, and multiple other scientific meetings.

Here in the Department of Radiation Oncology, we seek to recruit outstanding individuals who are enthusiastic, hard-working, and possess a sound foundation of basic science and clinical knowledge. We consider our residents to be a great asset, and we take pride in their training and education. Prior graduates of our program have performed successfully on both written and oral examinations of the American Board of Radiology and have gone on to obtain desirable academic and private practice positions throughout the country.
